Help for Pregnancy & Postnatal Symptoms

Pregnancy, birth and caring for a new baby place huge demands on your body. Whether you’re struggling with pregnancy or postnatal symptoms such as pelvic girdle or back pain, bladder leaks or wanting to get back to exercise or sex comfortably, physio can help.

While some aches and pains are common, they shouldn’t simply be accepted as something you have to put up with. At Inline Therapies in Nettleham (near Lincoln), I provide specialist assessment and treatment for pelvic and back pain, bladder and vagina symptoms. Physio can help you to stay active, reduce your pain and improve your confidence in your body throughout your pregnancy and beyond.

Many women don’t seek help because they think pregnancy and postnatal symptoms are a “normal” part of having a baby or feel embarrassed. However, statistics show that during pregnancy:

1 in 5 women develop pelvic girdle pain
1 in 2 women experience low back pain
1 in 3 women develop leak urine during or after pregnancy

How Can Physio Help With Pregnancy Symptoms?

As your body changes throughout pregnancy, it’s common to notice new aches, pains or changes in how you move. Physiotherapy can help with pregnancy and postnatal symptoms including:

  • Pelvic girdle pain (including SPD)
  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Buttock pain
  • Pain when walking or climbing stairs
  • Pain turning over in bed
  • Rib pain
  • Lightning crotch
  • Bladder leaks
  • Pelvic floor concerns
  • Advice on staying active and exercising during pregnancy

Treatment is always tailored to you, your stage of pregnancy and your goals.

Physio for Postnatal Symptoms

The body doesn’t automatically return to normal after birth. Whether your baby is six weeks or six years old, it’s never too late to seek help if something doesn’t feel quite right. Postnatal physiotherapy can help with:

  • Ongoing back or pelvic pain
  • Bladder leakage
  • Weakness around the tummy or core
  • Returning to exercise
  • Returning to running
  • Recovery after a caesarean birth
  • Scar discomfort
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Advice on lifting, feeding and caring for your baby more comfortably

Every recovery is different, and there’s no expectation that you should simply “get on with it.”

Postnatal symptoms and health

Why Women’s Health Physio?

Physiotherapy during and after pregnancy is clinically evidenced as a first-line treatment for many pregnancy and postnatal symptoms, including pelvic girdle pain, urinary incontinence and many musculoskeletal aches and pains.

Rather than simply treating the symptoms, we want to understand what’s contributing to them and tailor your treatment plan and strategies so you feel more comfortable and confident in your day-to-day life.

Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic girdle pain is one of the most common reasons women seek physio help during pregnancy. It can cause pain around the front or back of the pelvis, hips, bottom or groin, making normal activities like walking, getting dressed or getting in and out of the car or bed uncomfortable. You can see more information on the Pelvic Girdle Pain page.

Returning to Exercise Post Birth

Knowing when and how to return to activities and exercise can feel confusing, particularly if you’ve experienced pelvic pain, bladder leaks or a difficult birth. When you’re ready to get back to feeling more active and feeling stronger again, physio can help review how your body is recovering and guide you at a pace that’s right for you.

Bladder Leaks

Leaking urine during pregnancy or after childbirth is very common, but it’s not normal or something you have to accept.

More often than not, bladder leaks are very treatable! Having a women’s health assessment, alongside tailored exercises, practical techniques and advice, can often make a significant difference to urinary incontinence symptoms.

Sex After Having A Baby

Sex can feel different after having a baby. You may experience discomfort, dryness, scar sensitivity, pelvic floor symptoms or feel worried about whether everything has healed properly.

Having help to identify factors that may be contributing to symptoms and knowing what to do, can help you to feel more comfortable and confident about intimacy and your body.

Final Thoughts…

If you’ve been avoiding exercise, going out, wearing anything other than black trousers, or sex during or after pregnancy, you’re not alone. It brings such a wide range of changes to your body, and while many are common, they don’t all need to be accepted as “just how it is”. If something doesn’t feel right, support is available

Inline Therapies provides women’s health physio near Lincoln for bladder leaks, pelvic pain, pregnancy and postnatal symptoms and painful sex.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have questions, we have the answers!

If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to get in touch on the phone or through our contact page.

Your first women’s health physio appointment will be for 70 minutes, giving us the time to really understand your concerns and create a plan that works for you. During the first session we will talk through your symptoms, how they affect your daily life, and any past injuries or experiences that could be relevant.

Depending on what is needed, we may assess how your body moves and go through what we find so you know what may be happening and why. Together we’ll decide where to start and what you can get going with straight away. We’ll keep it simple and as easy to fit into your lifestyle as possible.

Follow-up appointments are a chance to check in with how things felt, the progress made and change things up as and when you’re ready. As your body adapts, your exercises and advice will evolve too. The goal is steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. Only when it’s helpful, treatment might include gentle hands-on techniques, such as soft tissue work or release techniques, to support movement and ease tension.

You’ll always leave with a clear plan and an understanding of the next steps. There’s no pressure to be perfect – progress over time is what matters.

If you have any questions between sessions or want to talk through anything before your next appointment, you can email support@inlinetherapies.co.uk

Any treatment or assessment is always explained beforehand and only carried out with your consent. You are always in control of what you are comfortable with. The appointments are completely led by what you want to focus on.

Due to the nature of the clinic, we do not have the facility to offer a chaperone for your appointment. Your first appointment generally does not include a vaginal examination. Instead, we focus on finding out about your symptoms and what your goals are, then putting a plan in place for you to start from that day.

In some cases, later in your treatment, a vaginal examination might provide extra insight and we would talk through it first and I can answer any questions you might have. The decision will always be completely yours, with your comfort and preferences respected at every step.

You are welcome to bring an informal chaperone, such as an adult family member or friend. Please note that for health and safety reasons, the clinic will need to be made aware that a chaperone will be present at the appointment, at the time the booking is made.

If a chaperone is brought to an appointment without prior arrangement, the appointment will not proceed, however it will still be charged as it was reserved and it would not be possible for it to be filled at short notice by another person in need.

Every person is different, so there’s no set number and will depend on your symptoms, consistency with advice and techniques, and what your goals are. For instance, research has shown that for urinary incontinence it typically takes around 3-4 months of consistent effort to notice improvements in symptoms. That would mean most women would start to see improvements by the third session and many women are discharged by session five or six.

That means you could be just a few appointments away from feeling confident, comfortable, and back in control! We’ll work together to create a plan that fits your lifestyle and goals and every small success will be celebrated along the way.

Women’s health physiotherapy commonly helps with bladder leaks, pelvic pain, painful sex, prolapse symptoms, and pregnancy or postnatal-related pain. You’ll receive guidance on performing pelvic floor muscle exercises correctly, and advice around lifestyle changes related to your specific issue. It’s so important to remain consistent with your treatment plan at home, even if it feels challenging at times. Without consistency, changes may take much longer or not happen at all.

Everything that we work through together, will provide you with the tools you need to manage these changes and maintain good pelvic health for life.

In most cases a GP referral is not required, meaning you can make an appointment with us directly. I am registered with WPA, Bupa and AXA Health Insurance so if you are a member with them, you may be able to claim your treatment through your policy. Contact your insurance provider and they will give you a ‘pre-authorisation code’ to provide at the time of booking.

However, there are a few exceptions where a doctor’s referral might be necessary other than for health insurance claims, such as if you have a specific medical condition that needs a doctor’s clearance before undergoing treatment.

You would not have an internal examination if any of the following were relevant to you at the time of the appointment. However we can still complete a thorough assessment of everything else which will give us information to design a treatment and advice for you:

*First 3 months of pregnancy
*Within 6 weeks of vaginal or cesarean delivery
*Within 6 weeks after pelvic surgery
*Atrophic vaginitis, a condition of fragile skin seen in cases
of oestrogen deficiency
*Active pelvic infection
*Severe pelvic or vaginal pain, especially pain during
penetration or intercourse
*Children and pre-sexual adolescents

If you can’t or don’t want to have an internal vaginal examination, it does not mean that your treatment will be limited. There are lots of alternative ways for us to help you.

If you’re unsure whether you need a referral, feel free to get in touch for further advice.

It’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting and/or flexible clothing that allows for easy movement. If you have pelvic pain, low back pain and/or abdominal pain there is often an element of undressing required. This is also the case for any physiotherapy appointment.

It is usually best to bring, or wear trousers or a skirt that you are easy to take off and put back on, and a vest top, or sports bra. Alternatively, wear suitable underwear. Clothing needs to be comfortable and easy to move around in.

Your comfort is paramount during your appointments and we want to ensure your clothing helps rather than hinders your progress.

When an appointment is booked, the time is not available to anyone else. I know that sometimes things come up and plans need to be changed, so I ask that any appointment that needs to be cancelled or rescheduled, is changed with at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled appointment time. You can cancel the appointment via your client portal up to 24 hours prior or get in touch.

As I work on a 1:1 basis, where an appointment is not cancelled with at least 24 hours notice, payment for the appointment will be required. Please do get in touch if you have any concerns or questions regarding this as I would like you to feel 100% comfortable about any booking you make.

“Lisa listens to my needs and works collaboratively with me at each appointment. I feel better in both my mind and body when I leave her appointments. She has given me exercises which have improved my strength, mobility, and significantly reduced my pain. ”
