At your initial consultation (approximately 45 minute appointment), a thorough assessment will help us to understand your goals and your child’s, and design a therapy program to suit their needs. It will usually include a combination of a movement and exercise programs, advice and education.
Physiotherapy is a team effort between the child, their family, their school and the therapist you’re working with. The more confident you feel with their therapy program, the happier you will feel to replicate it outside the clinic room – and this is where lasting changes happen! I’d like for you to feel more empowered and able to self-manage as much as possible.
After the initial session, depending on what you and your therapist think would work best for the child, further sessions can be arranged. To give the child the best possible chance of achieving good progress, the advice and therapy program will need to be followed consistently.
The number of physiotherapy sessions you may require can vary greatly depending on several factors. These can include the nature and severity of their condition, their individual health history, physiotherapy goals, and how their body responds to their exercises and activities.
Our aim is to help them experience positive changes as soon as possible. You may find these after 1-2 sessions, or you may feel further sessions would be useful to support and progress their presentation. Throughout their treatment, their progress will be regularly reviewed and the treatment plan adjusted as necessary. I always strive for efficient and effective treatment, and want you to feel that each session is productive.
In most cases a doctor’s referral is not required for physiotherapy at our clinic, meaning you can make an appointment with us directly.
However, there are a few exceptions where a doctor’s referral might be necessary. For instance, if your health insurance provider requires a referral for coverage, or if you have a specific medical condition that needs a doctor’s clearance before undergoing physiotherapy – an example of this would be recovering from a recent fracture.
If you’re unsure whether you need a referral, feel free to contact us, and our team would be happy to assist you. Remember, our primary goal is to make your path to recovery as smooth and straightforward as possible.
The initial assessment treatment session is designed to be comprehensive and thorough, and lasts 45 minutes. This allows us the time to discuss their health history, their specific needs, and to commence a personalised treatment plan.
Following the initial session, follow up sessions can be arranged. These 30 minute sessions will typically involve reviewing their progress, adjusting their treatment plan as necessary, and continuing with their therapeutic exercises and interventions.
For their physiotherapy sessions, it’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for easy movement and access if a specific area of the body will need to be assessed. For instance, if they’re attending a session for a knee issue, wearing shorts would be ideal. For upper body issues, a sleeveless top is often a good choice. They will be completing exercises and activities, so it’s essential they wear something they can move freely in.
As for footwear, trainers or other comfortable, closed-toe shoes are typically recommended. Children should avoid wearing jewellery, and it may be useful to tie back long hair, to ensure it does not interfere with the assessment or treatment. Their comfort is paramount during physiotherapy sessions, and hopefully their clothing will help rather than hinder their progress.
When an appointment is booked, the time is not available to anyone else to book. I know that sometimes things come up and plans need to be changed, so I ask that any appointment that needs to be cancelled or rescheduled, is changed with at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled appointment time. You can cancel the appointment via your client portal up to 24 hours prior or get in touch.
As I work on a 1:1 basis, where an appointment is not cancelled with at least 24 hours notice, payment for the appointment will be required. Please do get in touch if you have any concerns or questions regarding this as I would like you to feel 100% comfortable about any booking you make.
