Benefits of Women’s Health Physiotherapy
How can pelvic health therapy help me get back to feeling myself?
1 in 5 women will suffer with pelvic floor dysfunction at some point in their life. Symptoms range from pain, difficulty controlling urination or difficulty emptying the bladder.
Stress Urinary Incontinence
Passing urine during activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, or jumping. It can affect women at any age, often due to insufficient support from pelvic floor muscles and ligaments.
Urge Urinary Incontinence
Experiencing a strong urge to urinate even when the bladder isn’t full and may sometimes pass urine before reaching the toilet. It can be incorrectly associated with ageing too, but it can often be treated!
Overactive Bladder Syndrome
A collection of symptoms disrupting daily life, which may or may not include urine leaks. It may include: frequent urination at night, sudden and intense urges to urinate, and urinating 8+ times during the day.
Pelvic Girdle Pain
1 in 4 pregnant women experience PGP, and may include pain in the pelvis, groin, lower abdomen, hips, lower back, or buttocks. While common, PGP is not a normal part of pregnancy and can often be treated.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you have questions, we have the answers!
We’re here to provide clarity. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly team.
Our clients travel from a wide catchment area, throughout Lincolnshire and beyond, to attend the clinic in Nettleham.
We understand the importance of providing a private, discreet and caring environment in which women can seek advice and treatment.
It has free parking directly outside the clinic and no waiting room. Appointments are completely confidential from the moment you arrive.
For bladder and persistent pelvic pain symptoms, you may be asked if you are comfortable with a vaginal internal examination. This helps the physiotherapist assess the strength, coordination, and function of your pelvic floor muscles. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member to your appointment. Rest assured it is nothing like a Smear test! Your physiotherapist is specifically trained in a gentle examination with no requirement for a speculum or similar equipment.
An internal exam is considered the gold standard and most accurate way to assess muscle control. It can help to teach you about your muscles and their responsiveness/contraction with the aim of improving your pelvic function. It is often a key element for accurate diagnosis and more successful treatment outcomes.
The physiotherapist will explain why it is so useful and what it is. It doesn’t have to be used as part of an assessment and it will only be performed with your consent and only when you feel comfortable to.
If you prefer not to have the examination at your initial assessment, or need time to think it over, that is absolutely fine. You also have the right to decline the examination entirely. This will not affect your access to other treatments if they are deemed helpful. You can read more in the toggle below for ‘What Happens During an Internal Examination?’
After the assessment, the therapist will discuss their findings and the available options with you. Together you can then plan the most appropriate treatment.
A chaperone is a trained third party who attends an appointment or a clinical examination with you. They can provide support and reassurance, witness the continuing consent to a procedure, and on occasion provide practical help to the physiotherapist.
Due to the nature of the clinic, we do not have the facility to offer a chaperone for your appointment. However, you are very welcome to bring an informal chaperone, such as an adult family member or friend.
Please note that for health and safety reasons, the clinic will need to be made aware that a chaperone will be present at the appointment at the time the booking is made.
If you bring a chaperone to your appointment without prior arrangement with the clinic, we regret that the appointment cannot proceed. However, the appointment will still be charged as it was reserved specifically for you and cannot be filled at short notice by another patient in need.
Research has shown that it typically takes 3-4 months of consistent effort to notice changes and improvements in symptoms. You will receive guidance on performing pelvic floor muscle exercises correctly and how to progress them to ensure continued strength improvement. Additionally, making lifestyle changes related to your specific issue, may be crucial.
It’s important to remain consistent with your treatment plan at home, even if it feels challenging at times. Without consistency, changes may take much longer or not happen at all.
The information you will receive from your physiotherapist, will provide the tools you need to manage these changes and maintain good pelvic health for life.
In most cases a GP referral is not required for physiotherapy at our clinic, meaning you can make an appointment with us directly.
However, there are a few exceptions where a doctor’s referral might be necessary. For instance, if your health insurance provider requires a referral for coverage, or if you have a specific medical condition that needs a doctor’s clearance before undergoing physiotherapy.
You would not have an internal examination if any of the following were relevant to you at the time of the appointment. However we can still complete a thorough assessment of everything else which will give us information to design a treatment and advice for you:
*First 3 months of pregnancy
*Within 6 weeks of vaginal or cesarean delivery
*Within 6 weeks after pelvic surgery
*Atrophic vaginitis, a condition of fragile skin seen in cases
of oestrogen deficiency
*Active pelvic infection
*Severe pelvic or vaginal pain, especially pain during
penetration or intercourse
*Children and pre-sexual adolescents
If you can’t or don’t want to have an internal vaginal examination, it does not mean that your treatment will be limited. There are lots of alternative ways for us to help you.
If you’re unsure whether you need a referral, feel free to get in touch for further advice. Remember, our primary goal is to make your path to recovery as smooth and straightforward as possible.
Our initial assessment treatment session is designed to be comprehensive and thorough, hence it is scheduled for 60 minutes. This gives us ample time to discuss your health history, your specific needs, and to commence a personalised treatment plan.
Following the initial session, your review sessions will last approximately 45 minutes. These sessions will typically involve reviewing your progress, adjusting your treatment plan as necessary, and continuing with your personalised therapeutic exercises and interventions.
We always aim to make the most of the time you spend with us, ensuring that each session is as beneficial and effective as possible.
It’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting and/or flexible clothing that allows for easy movement.
If you have pelvic pain, low back pain and/or abdominal pain there is often an element of undressing required. This is also the case for any physiotherapy appointment.
It is usually best to bring, or wear trousers or a skirt that you are easy to take off and put back on, and a vest top, or sports bra. Alternatively, wear suitable underwear. Clothing needs to be comfortable and easy to move around in.
Please remember that your comfort is paramount during your physiotherapy sessions, and we want to ensure your clothing helps rather than hinders your progress.
When an appointment is booked, the time is not available to anyone else to book. I know that sometimes things come up and plans need to be changed, so I ask that any appointment that needs to be cancelled or rescheduled, is changed with at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled appointment time. You can cancel the appointment via your client portal up to 24 hours prior or get in touch.
As I work on a 1:1 basis, where an appointment is not cancelled with at least 24 hours notice, payment for the appointment will be required. Please do get in touch if you have any concerns or questions regarding this as I would like you to feel 100% comfortable about any booking you make.
